Wikis are great Web 2.0 tools for working together, collaborating and constructing new knowledge. For this activity on standards and to become familiar with using a wiki, we will each contribute to this chart about Standards and 21st Century Learning. As people add their thoughts and information you can see how wikis can be a powerful place for students in your class, in your school, in our district and globally to collaborate on projects.

Create, communicate, innovate, and collaborate
I have created a webpage that includes homework assignments, links to sites for parent and student information (MLA format, booknotes, recommended reads) interactive games to supplement learning, and youtube and podcast videos for support. Future plans include an interactive gradebook for students and parents to access.

2c - customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies and abilities using digital tools and resources
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving:
Interpret information and draw conclusions based on the best analysis
Using a google doc to track student interventions. This enables staff members to stop doing what is not effective with a student and keep track of effective interventions to ensure student learning progress.

I taught my students the characteristics of a mystery story. Then they worked in small groups to write a mystery story using real characters in our school. After coming up with a story map they wrote the story collaboratively and then used photostory to present the story. They took digital pictures showing the events of their book and recorded their voices telling the story. Using this technology made the book come alive!

1c - promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.
the ability to reflect on a piece of literature in a group setting and to utilize technology mediums to clarify student understanding
My students and I read the novel, Unwind. It is a controversial book for middle school students, but there are so many reasons why they should be able to read it. Many people believed that the students would not be able to fully appreciate Shusterman's work. Once the adversaries viewed the students' I-movies they changed their opinions. We need to give students a chance to reflect--not just on paper. You will be amazed with what students can create!

2b - engage students in exploring real-world isues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
Act on creative ideas to make a tangible and useful contribution to the field in which the innovation will occur.
Our school has a large number of visiting Canadian Geese every year. Currently the football team and several other sports teams share the fields with the geese. The students brainstormed different possible reasons the geese came, what kinds of problems they face on our fields, and what possible solutions to these problems could we come up with. Then, students used Photostory 3 to make videos describing the situation with the Brookhaven Goose issue and what might be done about it. The students were motivated and invested in this assignment (especially the sports players who use those fields).

4a - Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources
Apply a fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the access and use of information
I have used internet sites to teach students the importance of using technology safely. I teach a unit on internet safety and cyberbullying. I also teach students the proper way to cite various media sources. I have assigned research projects where students were required to cite all information and pictures they used from the internet. Some of the websites I have used are below.

Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking
I would like to create a research wiki using www.pbworks.com to log their science fair information as students are researching. Students will be able to peer review others' projects and the teacher will be able to provide comments and feedback to the students.
